Successful Snowy River Classic
Over 100 golfers participated in the 26th Snowy River Classic - held over the 6th & 7th January @ Orbost Golf Club. Extremely hot day on Saturday didn’t deter the majority of the field and some excellent scoring was achieved. Cooler conditions on the Sunday was a welcome relief for many of the players. The 2 day Stableford Competition was hotly contested and the course was presented in excellent condition. Congratulations to 12 yr old Jack Hooper (36 h/cap) who scored 38 & 43 points for a total of 81 to be the Men’s overall winner. Jack has only recently taken up the game and practices hard. He is a promising lefty and had been invited to represent East Gippsland DGA in the upcoming Junior Country Regions. Well done Jack, I’m sure we will see plenty more results like this from you.
The ladies winner was Audrey Gurtner (28 h/cap) who scored an impressive 42 pts each day for a total of 84. Audrey also won the ‘Country Girls Play Golf’ event held on the Sunday.
It was great to see the large amount of visitors, representing 26 clubs, and the fantastic support from the ‘Country Girls Play Golf’ group who boosted the numbers of women playing the Classic, and a special thank you to the Orbost Golf Club for hosting such a great event.

Successful Country Championships for East Gippsland Women
East Gippsland women have been well represented at the Golf Victoria Women’s Country Championship played at the Cobram-Barooga Golf Club. Players from Newry, Maffra, Kings Cove, Lakes Entrance and Tambo Valley have travelled to the border course for the Country Foursomes and singles championship. The Championships got off to a good start for East Gippsland when Tambo Valley’s Johanna Wyllie teamed with Jessica Pickwick (Kilmore GC) to come runners up in the 36 holes Foursomes event. This is the 4th time the pair have been runners up in the event.
Success for the women continued in the Country Championship with Janice Marchesi of Newry Golf Club winning the ‘Glenelg’ Cup for the best 36 holes nett in the ‘B’ Division. Janice had 78,75 = 153 to finish three shots clear of Maffra’s Sue Marsden. Sue however also won the best 36 holes gross with 96,98 = 194. Kerry Scott (Kings Cove) and Newry pair Robyn Walker and Janice Marchesi won the teams event on Day 1.
In the Country Championship, Johanna Wyllie won the best 36 hole nett with nett scores of 73,70=143. She also won the best nett for day 2 with a nett 70. The Country Championship now goes into the Matchplay stage with the top 8 players qualifying. Johanna has qualified in 4th position but was unfortunately defeated in the first round of the matchplay quarter finals.

Rimington wins EGDGA Championship
Craig Rimington of the Bairnsdale Golf Club has won the 2017 East Gippsland Championship.
There was a slight delay to today’s play while Craig (Bairnsdale’s Curator) swept the ice from the greens. A total of 52 players representing clubs from around East Gippsland were then presented with a terrific course and a wonderful day for golf. Craig shot 75 & 37 for a 27 hole total of 112 and then had to survive a sudden death playoff against Chris Shanahan of Orbost GC. Both players reached the 1st green in regulation and with Chris to putt first his 20 foot birdie putt just slid by the hole and finished some 6’ past the pin. Craig then had a 15’ putt up hill and was safely in after two putts for a regulation par. Chris unfortunately missed his return putt and the title was Craig’s.
